Why Do We Forget What We Just Read?

Ever read a paragraph twice and still struggle to remember what it says? Your brain may not be failing you—your working memory may be overloaded!

Have you ever tried remembering a phone number while answering a question? That mental juggling is called working memory—the brain’s temporary workspace that holds and processes information.

It helps students understand sentences, solve mathematical problems and follow instructions. But this workspace has limited capacity. When we worry about exams, check mobile notifications or multitask while studying, our attention gets divided, making learning more difficult.

A landmark study by psychologist Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch (1974) introduced the influential Working Memory Model, explaining how the mind temporarily handles verbal and visual information.

So, how can we make better use of this mental workspace?

Try this simple experiment: Read five unrelated words, close your eyes and recall them after 30 seconds. Now group them into meaningful categories and try again. Was remembering easier?

This technique, called chunking, helps organise information into manageable units.

Research suggests that organising information, practising active recall and reducing distractions can support effective learning.

Today’s Brain Task: Before studying, silence your phone, take three deep breaths and ask yourself: “What exactly do I want to understand?” After reading a paragraph, close the book and explain its meaning in your own words.

A simple working-memory exercise

Remember these numbers:      7 – 2 – 9 – 4 – 1 – 8

Now reverse them mentally.    Correct answer: 8 – 1 – 4 – 9 – 2 – 7

This requires temporarily holding and manipulating information.

Remember, learning is not simply about putting more information into your brain. It is about using your mental workspace wisely.

Train your attention, organise your information, and give your memory a better chance to learn!
